Yemen’s Houthi movement has rejected accusations that it directed a drone toward the Mecca region in Saudi Arabia, following a report from the Saudi-led coalition stating that its air defense systems successfully intercepted and neutralized an aerial vehicle above the location.
Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group had not conducted any operation targeting Saudi territory on Friday.
In a statement posted on X, Saree said the group’s operations were directed at oil facilities and military bases, rejecting the coalition’s claim that it had launched the intercepted drone.
Earlier, the Saudi-led coalition said its air defences had successfully intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone over the Mecca region.
The denial comes amid separate Houthi claims that the group had carried out six attacks on airports and energy facilities across Saudi Arabia.
Saree said the alleged operations targeted vital commercial and military infrastructure stretching from Saudi Arabia’s eastern and western coasts to Riyadh and the southern region of Najran.
The reported attacks came despite a rare meeting between senior Saudi and Iranian officials in Tehran earlier this week, where both sides agreed to address regional differences through dialogue.
Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan reportedly sent high-level representatives to the meeting, which raised hopes of improved regional cooperation.
However, tensions remain high as Houthi forces continue to launch missile and drone attacks against Saudi territory and Saudi-backed forces in Yemen.
The conflicting accounts surrounding the reported drone interception have yet to be independently verified.
