Enugu Unrest: Governor Mbah Calls for Unbiased Police Investigation and Strict Accountability

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has urged law enforcement to launch a comprehensive and unbiased investigation into the violence that erupted during a recent political gathering in the state, an incident that included a shooting and resulted in injuries to a resident.

Mbah said anyone found responsible for the incident would be held accountable through the appropriate legal process, regardless of their political connections.

The governor made the position known in a statement addressed to the people of Enugu, expressing concern over the violence and its impact on residents.

“My immediate concern is for those who have been hurt, those who experienced fear, and the families affected. I want to assure them that their safety and well-being matter to me personally,” he said.

Mbah said every citizen must be able to exercise their political rights without fear of intimidation or violence, irrespective of political affiliation.

He noted that incidents of political violence threatened the peace and security the state had worked hard to establish, adding that the reports deserved the government’s full attention.

The governor also reiterated the state government’s position regarding allegations of involvement in the violence, stressing that its responsibility was to protect lives, uphold the law and ensure justice.

“In furtherance of our preliminary findings regarding the incident, I expect the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation,” Mbah said.

He added that anyone found culpable would face the consequences of their actions through due legal process.

The governor’s intervention comes amid concerns over political violence and the safety of participants at political gatherings in Enugu State.
