Herders pay N4.5m compensation to farmers in Plateau

Herders have paid N4.5 million in compensation to 38 farmers following the destruction of their farms in Dambwash, Danbukor and Fokko villages, Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.

Acting Ardo of the area, Isa Shiga Dajji, told Daily Trust that the money was paid to promote mutual understanding and serve as a deterrent to others, adding that “for there to be peace, there must be peace.”

He said the compensation was paid in tranches and that the latest payment was the final instalment, calling on both farmers and herders to remain calm and embrace one another.

The Ardo recalled that following the destruction of the farms, they, as a community, intensified efforts to identify those responsible for the act, adding that they quickly traced them and compelled them to pay the compensation.

Our correspondent reports that the compensation followed an agreement reached on August 19, 2026, after the farms were reportedly destroyed on August 16, 2026.

Troops of Sector 5, Operation Enduring Peace, Bokkos, facilitated an amicable settlement between the affected farmers and the herders on Saturday, September 12.

All parties involved in the dispute were present during the settlement, including the Ardo of Tarangol District, who participated in the resolution process.

The herders subsequently fulfilled the agreement by paying the sum of N4.5 million to the 38 affected farmers as compensation for the damaged farms.

The military said the settlement was concluded peacefully without any incident.

Daily Trust reports that the development highlights the significance of community-based conflict resolution in preventing disputes, especially between farming and herding communities, from escalating into violence and the killing of livestock and people.

Security forces have continued to encourage affected communities to seek peaceful resolution of disputes and avoid resorting to reprisal attacks or taking the law into their hands, which could worsen tensions.
