Enugu Police Reveal Identity of 27-Year-Old Medical Graduate Allegedly Murdered by Boyfriend

The Enugu State Police Command has officially identified 27-year-old Chinyere Rosemary Ugwu as the woman allegedly killed by her boyfriend, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel.

Ugwu was a graduate of Medical Laboratory Science from the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, and had recently completed her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

The command disclosed the development in an update on the arrest of Emmanuel, a 30-year-old resident of Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, who was earlier arrested in connection with the alleged murder.

The police said the victim’s parents and siblings had also been identified and interviewed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, alongside the suspect.

According to the command, the CP reassured the deceased’s family that justice would be served in the case.

Emmanuel was arrested on September 21, 2026, after he was allegedly found in connection with the death of his girlfriend.

The police had earlier said preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect allegedly killed the woman on September 19, wrapped her remains in nylon and concealed them inside the toilet of his apartment.

The decomposing remains reportedly attracted the attention of neighbours, who forced the apartment door open and apprehended the suspect before police operatives arrived.

The remains were subsequently evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

During preliminary interrogation, the police said Emmanuel confessed to the alleged crime, claiming that it followed an argument with the deceased over allegations concerning who infected the other with HIV.

He allegedly told investigators that he struck Ugwu on the head with a pestle during the argument, resulting in her death, before wrapping and concealing her remains inside the toilet.

The Commissioner of Police had directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation into the case and ensure the suspect is arraigned upon the conclusion of investigations.

The command also renewed its warning to members of the public, particularly young women, to exercise caution when visiting or spending time with people they know.

“Once again, be careful about who you go out with. Ladies, especially, let someone you trust know your whereabouts. Do not assume that because you know someone, you are necessarily safe with them. People can change,” the command said.
