Ghana and Kyrgyzstan Deepen Strategic Ties Ahead of Major AU and UN Leadership Roles

Leaders from Ghana and Kyrgyzstan have engaged in high-level discussions aimed at enhancing multilateral strategic collaboration, with both nations gearing up for upcoming prominent leadership responsibilities within the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed this in a post on his X handle on Friday, October 2, following a meeting between Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Minister, Jeenbek Kulubayev.

According to Ablakwa, the discussions focused on Ghana’s preparations for President Mahama to assume the chairmanship of the African Union in January next year, alongside Kyrgyzstan’s expected role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

He said Mahama shared insights on strengthening collaboration between the AU and the United Nations, particularly in efforts to resolve conflicts.

“President Mahama shared insights on how the AU and the UN can effectively collaborate to end conflicts particularly leveraging UN Resolution 2719 and pursuing effective coordination to bring about transformation and opportunities for the people we serve,” Ablakwa said.

The meeting also reviewed bilateral relations between Ghana and Kyrgyzstan, including the recently signed Visa Waiver Agreement, cooperation in the mining sector and efforts to increase investments between both countries.

Ablakwa said Mahama also expressed appreciation to Kyrgyzstan for supporting a Ghana-led United Nations resolution declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans as the “gravest crime against humanity.”

The Ghanaian minister further disclosed that Kulubayev announced that Kyrgyzstan’s President, Sadyr Japarov, had accepted Mahama’s invitation to attend Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary celebrations next year.

“Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubayev disclosed that the President of Kyrgyzstan, His Excellency Sadyr Japarov will honour President Mahama’s invitation and attend Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary Celebrations next year,” he added.
