Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have rescued two abandoned newborn babies in separate incidents recorded in Kurudu and Gwagwalada Area Council.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, disclosed this to journalists at the command headquarters in Abuja on Friday.
He said the first baby was found on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m. around Obodo Street, Kurudu, after a resident, Mr Innocent, was attracted by the cry of a baby.
Sanusi said Innocent subsequently reported the discovery at the Kurudu Police Station.
According to him, the newborn was found carefully wrapped in a cloth and abandoned inside a carton.
He said officers from the Kurudu Division, alongside personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care (JWC) Department, were promptly deployed to the scene and rescued the baby.
The commissioner said the baby was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and was found to be in stable condition.
He said efforts were being intensified to establish the circumstances surrounding the abandonment, adding that the necessary documentation had been completed and the baby handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care.
Sanusi further disclosed that another newborn baby was rescued after being abandoned by a woman later that night, at about 9:40 p.m., in Gwagwalada Area Council.
According to him, a resident of the area, Mr Ibrahim, heard a baby crying outside a house gate and, upon checking, discovered that a newborn had been abandoned.
He said Ibrahim, with the assistance of some neighbours, rescued the baby and reported the incident at the Gwagwalada Police Station.
“The new baby, which is a baby girl, was promptly taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital by the JWC Department of the Division for medical examination and is currently receiving care before it will be handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care,” he said.
The commissioner said efforts were also ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the baby.
He commended Innocent, Ibrahim and other members of the communities for their prompt intervention in rescuing the babies and reporting the incidents to the police.
Sanusi appealed to anyone with information that could assist in identifying the mothers or other family members of the babies to come forward and provide such information to the nearest police station or contact the command’s Public Relations Officer on 07038979348 or 08107314192.
