Funso Doherty is a prominent Nigerian politician, investment banker, and pension fund administrator who is actively contesting for the seat of Lagos State governor in the upcoming 2027 gubernatorial elections.
With more than three decades of experience in financial services, investment management and pension administration, Doherty has built a career spanning Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States.
He contested the Lagos governorship election in 2023 and is returning to the race in 2027 under the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC). His party has unveiled Tolani Animashaun as his running mate and introduced its Ona Tuntun manifesto, a 34-point programme outlining its proposed agenda for Lagos.
Here is what to know about him.
Early Life and Family Background
Funso Doherty was born in Lagos on June 16, 1968, into a family with medical, civil service and commercial backgrounds.
His father, the late Dr Henry Aderounmu Aremu Doherty, was a medical doctor born in Lagos in 1900. He was the son of Josiah Henryson Doherty, popularly known as the “Prince Merchant of Alakoro”. His paternal grandmother, Germana, was from the Reis family.
Doherty’s mother, Gladys Urunowonekawo Kirstein, who died in September 2024, was born in 1931 to an Itsekiri mother, Mary Kponuko Eyesan, and a German father.
He grew up on Wakeman Street, now known as Borno Way, in Yaba, Lagos.
His father operated a private medical practice on Aje Street after working as a medical officer during the colonial administration. He had studied medicine in Glasgow, Scotland, completing his medical education in 1926.
His mother retired from the then National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) after 35 years in the civil service.
Educational Background
Doherty began his education at Corona School, Victoria Island, Lagos, where he was appointed Head Boy and completed his primary education in 1979.
He proceeded to King’s College, Lagos, following in the footsteps of his father, who graduated from the institution in 1918.
At King’s College, he was a Federal Government Academic Scholar. He also received the school’s Service to College Life award, having been elected Form Captain by his peers for four consecutive terms.
He later studied Accounting at the University of Lagos, graduating with a Second Class Upper Division degree in 1990.
While at the university, he was a member of the ABC Club and was elected its Chief by fellow members.
National Youth Service
Doherty began his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme at the Yikpata orientation camp in Kwara State, where he served as Platoon Leader.
For his primary assignment, he taught for one year at a secondary school in a rural community in Okehi Local Government Area, which was then part of Kwara State but is now in Kogi State.
He completed his national service in 1991.
Career in Accounting and Investment Management
After NYSC, Doherty joined the Lagos office of Arthur Andersen & Co., now KPMG, in 1991.
He reportedly earned about ₦1,800 monthly at the time. During his three years with the firm, he received professional training in Nigeria and abroad and rose to the position of Senior.
Although he passed the qualifying examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), he decided against pursuing a long-term career in accounting practice and left the firm in 1994.
That year, he joined Asset & Resource Management Company (ARM), which was then part of the Guaranty Trust Bank group.
At ARM, he specialised in investment management and became one of the pioneers of Nigeria’s mutual fund industry.
Harvard Business School and Wall Street Experience
In 1999, Doherty began a Master of Business Administration programme at Harvard Business School in the United States, graduating in 2001.
Following his graduation, he joined the Investment Management Division of Goldman, Sachs & Co.
He was working in downtown Manhattan when the World Trade Center was attacked on September 11, 2001.
He subsequently joined PNC Advisors, the investment management business of the PNC banking group, as a Vice President at its headquarters in Pennsylvania.
His experience in the United States added international exposure to his career in investment management and financial services.
Return to Nigeria and Pension Industry Leadership
Doherty returned to Nigeria in 2005 to become the pioneer Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ARM Pension Managers.
He led the company from its establishment into one of Nigeria’s leading pension fund administrators.
During his tenure, he led what was described as the pension industry’s first major merger and acquisition. His fellow industry operators also elected him as the pioneer Chairman of the Pension Fund Operators Association, the umbrella body for licensed pension operators.
In 2011, he left the organisation to focus on private investing and established Doherty and Company.
Between 2014 and 2017, he partnered with the African Capital Alliance group following its acquisition of its joint venture partner’s interest in ValuAlliance Asset Management, formerly SIM Capital Alliance.
He served as the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer as well as a co-investor.
Nomination as PenCom Director-General
In 2017, the then Acting President nominated Doherty as Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), alongside a new slate of commissioners.
However, the appointments were not concluded or forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
He later returned to the private pension management sector.
PAL Pensions and Professional Affiliations
Doherty completed his tenure as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of PAL Pensions in 2022.
At the company, he led a nationwide team managing pension assets valued at more than half a trillion naira.
He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder and a co-founding trustee of CFA Society Nigeria. He is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.
His professional background spans accounting, investment banking, asset management, pension administration and private investment.
Entry into Politics and 2023 Governorship Election
Doherty moved into active electoral politics in 2023 when he contested the Lagos State governorship election.
Although he did not win, the election marked his entry into the state’s political contest as a candidate seeking to challenge the established political structure.
He has remained involved in politics and governance since then.
2027 Governorship Ambition
In April 2026, Doherty declared his intention to contest the Lagos governorship election again in 2027.
He subsequently joined the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in May 2026, positioning himself for another attempt at the state’s top political office.
The NDC also presented its Ona Tuntun campaign manifesto, a 34-point programme setting out the party’s proposed commitments and priorities for Lagos State.
The manifesto provides the policy framework around which Doherty’s 2027 campaign is expected to be built.
What Sets Him Apart?
Doherty’s political pitch is backed by a career largely built outside elective politics.
His experience in investment management, pension administration and financial services gives him a background in managing large financial portfolios and leading private-sector institutions.
He also brings international professional exposure, having studied at Harvard Business School and worked with major financial institutions in the United States.
His challenge in the 2027 contest will be to translate that experience into a convincing political programme that addresses the everyday concerns of Lagos residents, including transportation, housing, infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment and the cost of living.
As he prepares for another governorship contest, voters will be assessing not only his professional credentials but also the practical proposals contained in the Ona Tuntun manifesto and his ability to deliver on them.
