Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence is powerful enough to cause events resulting in up to a billion deaths if used maliciously.
Gates made the remarks in an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, amid growing concerns over the potential dangers of increasingly advanced AI systems.
“AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that … cause a billion deaths,” Gates said.
He added that there had “never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools.”
Gates also rejected the idea that AI companies should be left to regulate themselves, arguing that governments need to establish laws, safeguards and monitoring systems.
“No one thinks self-regulation is enough,” he said, calling for lawmakers and law-enforcement agencies to be involved in determining appropriate safeguards.
His warning comes amid a wider debate over AI safety, including concerns about the technology being used for cyberattacks, fraud, disinformation and the development of biological threats.
Gates has recently stepped up his calls for stronger government oversight of AI, saying governments are lagging behind the pace of technological development.
