German Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are exploring investment opportunities in Nigeria’s steel and metallurgical sectors, with the Federal Government seeking partnerships in technology transfer, mineral processing and equipment manufacturing.

The development emerged on Thursday, September 24, 2026, when the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, received a delegation of German OEMs led by the Head of VDMA-German OEMs, Dr Chux Onaa, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting focused on translating previous discussions between Nigeria and Germany into concrete investment and industrial partnerships, particularly across the steel value chain.

Audu said Nigeria’s significant mineral and metallurgical resources, combined with its large and growing market, offered substantial opportunities for German investors.

He said the government was committed to creating an enabling environment for a competitive and technology-driven steel industry that could support manufacturing, infrastructure development, job creation and economic diversification.

The minister identified equipment manufacturing and supply, mineral processing, steel production, engineering services, technology transfer and capacity development as key areas where German companies could participate.

He specifically expressed the ministry’s interest in German OEMs becoming involved in ongoing and emerging projects within Nigeria’s steel and metallurgical sectors.

“The presence of the German delegation in Nigeria demonstrates the growing interest of German industries in the country’s industrial sector and presents an opportunity to build sustainable partnerships that will deliver tangible benefits to both nations,” Audu said.

He said the engagement followed discussions at the 9th German-African Economic Forum in Dortmund, Germany, where Nigeria and German businesses explored opportunities in steel development, mining, mineral processing, engineering and industrial investment.

Audu described the latest visit as a significant step towards establishing a high-technology industrial partnership between both countries.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Steel Development, Ambassador Nura Abba Rimi, said the engagement aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the decision to establish the ministry to revitalise Nigeria’s steel industry.

Earlier, Onaa said the delegation was in Nigeria to consolidate areas of collaboration and investment in the development of the steel sector.

He said German OEMs had technologies capable of supporting raw-material processing, particularly in the cement and building materials industries.

The engagement is expected to provide a platform for identifying specific projects where German technology, equipment and investment can support Nigeria’s drive to develop local mineral value chains and expand industrial production.
