The Police in Benue State have dismantled a suspected arms supply network linked to terrorists with the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect with live ammunition in Guma Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, on Friday the command disclosed the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition from the suspect.
Aondongu said the breakthrough followed a routine stop-and-search operation by operatives of the Guma Police Division on Tuesday.
He said that the operatives intercepted two men riding on a motorcycle, but one of the occupants jumped off and fled into a nearby bush on sighting the officers.
However, the remaining suspect, identified as Joro Jakata, 20, from Awe LGA of Nasarawa State, was arrested.
The PPRO added that a search of the suspect reportedly led to the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition concealed in his possession.
He said that the suspect is in custody while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Makurdi, for further investigation.
Aondongu added that efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect and determine the source, intended destination and circumstances surrounding the movement of the ammunition.
The statement further noted that the Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, commended the operatives for their vigilance and professionalism, describing the operation as another major success in the command’s efforts to dismantle criminal networks and curb the proliferation of illegal firearms and ammunition in the state.
Nwadiogbu urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police formation, assuring them that all credible information would be treated confidentially and acted upon without delay.
