Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, and Governor of Rivers State, Sir Simimalayi Fubara, on Sunday met in Port Harcourt amid reports of setbacks in the ongoing reconciliation between their camps.
Wike received Fubara, who was accompanied by former APC Deputy National Chairman, Sam Jaja, at his residence in Port Harcourt, in what political observers described as a fresh move to consolidate the reconciliation between the two political allies.
Daily Trust observes that Sunday’s meeting was the first between Wike and Fubara since the governor withdrew his intention to seek re-election in the forthcoming 2027 governorship election.
Wike was accompanied to the meeting by the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State, Kingsley Chinda, and Chairman of the Rainbow Coalition reconciliation committee, Senator Magnus Abe.
The meeting came amid renewed efforts to mend the strained relationship between Wike and Fubara following months of political crisis that polarised Rivers State.
Wike had recently declared that the political feud with Fubara was over, adding that the governor had agreed to return to the political family that supported his emergence as governor in 2023.
The relationship between the two men deteriorated shortly after Fubara assumed office, leading to a prolonged political crisis in the state.
The crisis resulted in impeachment proceedings initiated against Fubara by lawmakers loyal to Wike, a situation that prompted President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the state.
The two camps later reached a truce, with Fubara joining the APC and aligning with the Wike-backed Rainbow Coalition.
Afterward, a reconciliation committee headed by Senator Magnus Abe was constituted to engage Fubara and his supporters.
However, last week, there were reports in the state that the reconciliation efforts had stalled, as both camps were said to have failed to reach a common ground that would be beneficial to their supporters.
An APC chieftain in the state confided in Daily Trust that the meeting between the two leaders could help resolve their differences and enable the party to approach the 2027 general election as a united house.
