Nigeria will retain its designated position, including its front-row seat, at the 81st United Nations General Assembly as Vice President Kashim Shettima represents President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has said.
Ibrahim said more than 60 per cent of countries listed to speak at the ongoing high-level session were being represented by either their vice presidents or foreign ministers.
The envoy, who is also Chairman of the UN Committee on Budget and Administration, said there was nothing unusual about countries delegating senior officials to represent their heads of government at the General Assembly.
In a statement issued by the Nigerian Mission to the United Nations in New York, Ibrahim said Shettima and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, would participate fully in the high-level diplomatic engagements.
“The Vice President and the Minister of Foreign Affairs are adequately positioned to represent Nigeria at the General Assembly and participate fully in the diplomatic engagements surrounding the session.”
He said President Tinubu would not personally attend the UNGA because he is currently in France on annual leave.
“The absence of the President should not be interpreted as Nigeria being inadequately represented. Our delegation will continue to participate fully in the proceedings,” Ibrahim said.
The Nigerian envoy urged Nigerians to view the country’s participation from the broader perspective of diplomatic representation, stressing that Nigeria would continue to play its role fully at the General Assembly.
