Israeli opposition leaders have called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unfit to serve following a report that United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed warned him about a planned Hamas attack days before the October 7, 2023 assault.
According to an investigation by Haaretz, bin Zayed spoke to Netanyahu by phone about 10 days before the attack and warned that then-Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was preparing a major operation against Israel.
The reported 45-minute conversation allegedly included warnings that the attack could cause heavy casualties, destabilise the region and threaten the Abraham Accords.
The report further alleged that Netanyahu believed Hamas was preparing an operation in the West Bank and did not pass the Emirati warning to Israel’s top security officials.
Opposition figures have seized on the claims to renew demands for Netanyahu’s resignation and an independent investigation into the security failures surrounding the October 7 attack.
Former military chief and opposition politician Gadi Eisenkot accused Netanyahu of leading Israel into the disaster despite warnings, while former prime minister Naftali Bennett also backed calls for accountability.
Netanyahu’s office has strongly denied the report, describing the claim that he spoke to the UAE president about the planned attack as “an absolute lie”.
The allegations have emerged as Netanyahu faces mounting political pressure ahead of Israel’s October 27 election, with his handling of the October 7 security failure remaining a major issue in the campaign.
The October 7 Hamas attack killed about 1,200 people in Israel and saw 251 people taken hostage, according to figures cited by the Associated Press.
