The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, has suspended its ongoing strike following the Kaduna State Government’s approval of the implementation and domestication of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement for academic staff.
The union announced the suspension after its congress meeting on Thursday, September 17, 2026, where members unanimously accepted the approvals by the state government, KASU Governing Council and university management.
In a communiqué signed by the KASU-ASUU Chairman, Comrade Abubakar Abdullahi, and Secretary, Comrade Silas Amos Bakut, the union said implementation of the agreement would commence from October 2026.
The union also said the KASU Governing Council and management had approved the commencement of payment of nine months’ accrued arrears covering the period from January to September.
“Based on the conditions mentioned above, the congress resolved to suspend the ongoing strike action in the branch, effective 12:01am, 18th September, 2026,” the communiqué stated.
The union said the approval of the agreement and payment of the arrears represented significant steps towards restoring stability and industrial harmony at the university.
It added that the development would strengthen staff welfare, improve staff retention and enhance productivity across the institution.
ASUU-KASU had recently raised concerns over the implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement, particularly the new conditions of service for academic staff in Nigerian universities, which became effective from January 2026.
The union commended Governor Uba Sani for approving the implementation and domestication of the agreement at KASU.
It also praised members of the government negotiation team for their “dedication, commitment and prompt attention” to the issues raised by the union.
The union expressed appreciation to the university management for providing relevant information, documents and support to both the government negotiation team and ASUU-KASU during negotiations.
According to the communique, the union also acknowledged the “patience, restraint and understanding” demonstrated by the government and university management throughout the dispute.
It said neither the union nor its members were subjected to threats or intimidation during the strike, describing the approach as a demonstration of respect for due process and constructive engagement.
“The union was allowed to exhaust its established internal procedures in both commencing and suspending the strike action,” it stated.
ASUU-KASU also apologised to students and stakeholders for the disruption caused by the industrial action, saying it looked forward to welcoming students back to the classrooms as soon as possible.
The union said it expected the approved provisions to be implemented fully and in a timely manner by the relevant authorities.
