Arsenal forward Kai Havertz and Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey picked up injuries as the Netherlands drew 1-1 with Germany in the Nations League.

The match marked the first games in charge for two high-profile new managers, with former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp leading Germany and Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez taking charge of the Netherlands.

Felix Nmecha put Germany ahead from close range in the first half before Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo equalised in stoppage time with a volley from Ruben van Bommel’s cross.

However, injuries to Havertz and Brobbey overshadowed the contest.

Havertz was forced off after being caught on the knee by a high boot from Quinten Timber in Amsterdam.

Brobbey, who had scored a hat-trick in Sunderland’s 5-3 defeat by Manchester City, also appeared to suffer a muscle injury and was substituted.

Klopp and Xavi were managing national teams for the first time since leaving Liverpool and Barcelona respectively in May 2024.

Germany have selected two different squads for the international break, with separate groups named for the opening two and final two matches.

Van Bommel, who came on as a late substitute, became the third generation of his family to represent the Netherlands after his father, Mark van Bommel, and grandfather, Bert van Marwijk.

Klopp said Germany had to accept the result despite his desire to win.

“We have to accept the result,” said Klopp. “Even though I badly wanted to win I take the draw.

“I was very, very, very pleased with a lot of the individual performances. Overall, I was very happy with the passion we showed. We can play better and play more football, that’s for sure.”

The result leaves both teams with points to build on as Klopp and Xavi continue their first international assignments in charge of Germany and the Netherlands.
