Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has blamed Nigeria’s judiciary for the country’s corruption crisis, arguing that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should not be regarded as the country’s main problem.
Kuti made the remarks during a recent episode of the Good News Naija podcast, where he described corruption in Nigeria as institutional and blamed the wider political elite for the problem.
The musician questioned how Tinubu was able to contest the presidency if the corruption allegations against him were sufficient to disqualify him.
“Do you think Tinubu is the problem? The judiciary that didn’t stop him from getting there in the first place is a problem. If all the allegations against him are true, how did he contest?” Kuti asked.
He argued that a judicial system led by people of integrity would have prevented candidates facing credible corruption allegations from contesting elections.
“If we had men and women of calibre and integrity, he wouldn’t have been able to contest in the first place,” he said.
Kuti maintained that Nigeria’s challenges extend beyond individual politicians, saying corruption had become embedded across institutions and among those entrusted with leadership in different sectors.
