The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has called on Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, accusing him of misrepresenting his financial record as Governor of Anambra State.
In a press statement issued on Monday, Campaign Council Spokesman Dele Alake alleged that disclosures from the Anambra State Government contradict Mr Obi’s long-standing claims of fiscal prudence and a debt-free tenure.
According to the state’s figures, Mr Obi spent approximately $4.05bn (₦5.4 trillion) during his eight years in office and accumulated $123.77m in external loans across eight separate borrowing agreements for healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Current state officials confirm these debts are still being serviced by subsequent administrations.
The APC statement further alleged that Mr Obi left unpaid salary arrears for public sector workers, citing a 2006 internal memorandum from his then-Chief of Staff regarding unpaid staff at the state Water Corporation.
Highlighting a past pledge by Mr Obi to step down from the presidential contest if evidence proved he left liabilities behind, the APC argued he should now honour that commitment.
Mr Obi’s campaign team has not yet issued a formal response to the claims.
