Air Forces Condole Nigeria Over Crash, Prepare For 2027 Exercise

The Association of African Air Forces (AAAF) has conveyed its deepest sympathies to the Nigerian Air Force, the federal government, and all citizens of Nigeria following the tragic ATR aircraft crash in Ondo State, even as preparations ramp up for an upcoming multinational air force exercise slated for February 2027.

The Association conveyed its sympathy during trilateral engagements involving the United States, Kenya and Nigeria in Kenya. Representing the AAAF Co-Chairman, Major General Melissa Coburn delivered the condolences, while the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, represented by Group Captain Olakunle Bankole, expressed appreciation for the gesture.

At Moi Air Base, participating delegations reviewed the objectives of the planned exercise, responsibilities and areas of cooperation, with Kenya reaffirming its commitment to its successful conduct.

The AAAF also engaged the Eastern African Standby Force (EASF) on possible participation in the exercise. The EASF delegation, led by its Force Commander, Brigadier General Stephen Huria, expressed interest in contributing, particularly in the area of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief.

Discussions during the engagements focused on joint learning, operational interoperability and the need to translate training into practical capabilities for responding to security threats and humanitarian emergencies.

The Association said the engagements form part of efforts to strengthen partnerships among African air forces and international partners.

The 2027 African Air Forces Exercise (AAAFEX 2027) is expected to enhance operational preparedness and strengthen coordinated responses to shared security and humanitarian challenges across the continent.
