Ahmadu Bello University Secures Position as Nigeria’s Third-Highest-Ranked Public University

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria has further solidified its reputation on the international academic stage by being named Nigeria’s third-highest-ranked public university in the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

The university was ranked fourth overall among Nigerian universities, placing it in the 1,001–1,200 global band alongside Bayero University, Landmark University and the University of Ilorin.

ABU’s latest performance also saw it rank fourth in Nigeria and 42nd in Africa in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, with an overall score of 5,552.5 points. Globally, the university placed 1,032nd out of 2,016 participating institutions from 110 countries.

The two results highlight the university’s performance across different aspects of contemporary higher education — from teaching and research to industry engagement, international outlook and environmental sustainability.

The THE World University Rankings assess institutions using 17 performance indicators grouped into five broad areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook. The 2027 edition covers 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories.

Within Nigeria, ABU recorded a third-place position in the Teaching category and also ranked third in Industry, according to the Nigerian breakdown.

Its performance in the Industry category reflects areas including industry income and patents, making ABU the second-highest-ranked federal university on that indicator.

Overall, the THE ranking places ABU behind Covenant University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos, which occupied the 801–1,000 global band.

ABU’s performance in the UI GreenMetric ranking provides another dimension to its recent global showing.

The GreenMetric ranking evaluates universities based on their commitment to sustainable campus development and environmental responsibility.

ABU scored 1,300 points in Energy and Climate Change, 905 in Water, 800 in Transportation, 700 in Education, 685 in Setting and Infrastructure, 612.5 in Governance and Digitalisation, and 550 in Waste, bringing its total to 5,552.5 points.

The university’s fourth-place position in Nigeria places it among the country’s leading institutions in the sustainability-focused ranking.

The significance of ABU’s latest results lies in the different areas assessed by the two ranking systems.

While THE measures broad institutional performance, including teaching, research, industry engagement and international outlook, UI GreenMetric focuses specifically on sustainability, environmental management, infrastructure, transportation, waste, water, energy and climate action, as well as governance and digitalisation.

Taken together, the results offer a broader picture of ABU’s performance across academic, research, industry and sustainability-related priorities.

The rankings also provide benchmarks for the university as it continues efforts to strengthen its teaching and learning environment, research ecosystem, industry partnerships, international collaborations and sustainable campus development.

ABU’s latest performances add to its growing presence in international university rankings. Earlier in 2026, the university was ranked third in Nigeria in the QS World University Rankings 2027, fourth in Nigeria by the Centre for World University Rankings and third in Nigeria by the U.S. News Best Global Universities Ranking.

The latest results therefore give the university additional benchmarks as it seeks to improve its global visibility and institutional performance.

From teaching and research to innovation, industry collaboration and sustainable campus development, ABU’s showing across the two latest rankings underscores the breadth of areas now shaping the global assessment of universities.
