On Monday, a Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed the eight-count criminal indictment filed by the federal government against Adeniyi Adeyemi, who is accused of posing as the Director General of the nonexistent Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).
Justice Mohammed Umar terminated the trial of Adeyemi before him following the request of the federal government to that effect and on the basis that the accused person would be moved to the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory for fresh arraignment.
At Monday’s proceedings, Rotimi Oyedepo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN and Director of the Public Prosecution of the Federation DPPF moved the application for the termination of the charges.
Oyedepo told the Judge that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice AGF carried out a review of the case file of Adeyemi and the charge filed by the Inspector General of Police and found some loopholes.
Among others, he said that the documents allegedly forged by Adeyemi during his operations of the fake agency are those that can be prosecuted by the High Court of the FCT and not the Federal High Court.
What You Should Know
This case revolves around Adeniyi Adeyemi, who was accused of running a phantom government agency called the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council and forging official documents. The federal government decided to drop the current charges at the Federal High Court because a review by the Attorney General’s office showed that the alleged forgery offenses should properly be tried at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory instead.
- Positive Impact: This move ensures that the prosecution is handled by the appropriate court with the right legal jurisdiction, maintaining proper judicial standards and preventing technical loopholes that could compromise the case.
- Potential Concerns: The existence of a phantom agency operating and forging documents highlights potential vulnerabilities in public administration and underscores the need for stronger oversight to protect unsuspecting citizens from fraudulent government bodies.
