Former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesman, Kenneth Okonkwo, says his relationship with Peter Obi will be different ahead of the 2027 general election, declaring that he defended the former Anambra State governor in 2023 but will now subject his record to scrutiny.
Okonkwo, who is now associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said he had previously assured Nigerians that Obi left office without outstanding debts or unpaid obligations to workers.
He, however, said his position changed after what he described as new facts emerged concerning Obi’s tenure as governor.
“I was misled,” Okonkwo said, explaining his revised position on claims surrounding Obi’s financial record in Anambra State.
The Anambra State Government has alleged that Obi’s administration secured eight external loan facilities, with about $92.35 million, or ₦127.37 billion, still outstanding as of June 30, 2026. The state has also raised claims over unpaid salary, gratuity and pension obligations involving workers of the Anambra State Water Corporation.
Obi and his supporters have disputed aspects of the allegations, leaving the issue as part of an ongoing political dispute over his record in office.
Okonkwo said he was willing to change his position when presented with information he considered credible.
“I’m not a man that stands on my own misunderstanding. When I see the facts, I agree,” he said.
He said his approach to the 2027 election would therefore be different from his role in the 2023 campaign.
“That was why I said in 2023 I campaigned for them in examination-in-chief, but in 2027 it’s going to be cross-examination,” Okonkwo said.
Okonkwo also described the ADC as a coalition platform rather than a conventional single-party project, as opposition politicians seek to build a broader alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.
He criticised the Bola Tinubu administration over the economy and other government policies, arguing that a united opposition could challenge the ruling APC in 2027.
