Super Falcons coach, Justin Madugu, has described Nigeria’s shock defeat to Malawi as a timely “wake-up call,” insisting the loss should serve as a lesson rather than a setback as the reigning African champions continue their campaign at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Nigeria, placed in Group C, were stunned 2-3 by debutants Malawi in the opening group-stage match, positioning the Super Falcons in third place in Group C.
In a post-match conference, Madugu praised his players for their commitment despite the disappointing outcome.
“I want to appreciate the girls for the effort they put into the game. They gave it their all and their best. We made mistakes and we got punished for those mistakes,” he said.
The coach defended his team selection, explaining that every decision was based on players’ performances and tactical considerations.
He also revealed that the late arrival of midfielder Deborah Abiodun affected her involvement, as the technical crew chose not to risk injuries by rushing her into action.
Madugu dismissed criticism over players being deployed in unfamiliar positions, pointing out that versatility has always been one of the team’s strengths.
He cited previous tournaments where players successfully adapted to different roles and maintained that the defensive errors that led to the defeat were collective rather than individual.
“We accept responsibility for what happened. It’s a wake-up call for all of us, and we’ll go back, correct the mistakes and get it right next time,” he added.
The coach also urged Nigerians not to underestimate Malawi, noting that the Southern African side deserved respect after benefiting from regular regional competitions that have aided their development.
“The Malawians are a good side. Any team that qualifies for the WAFCON deserves respect. They prepared very well and got the result they worked for,” he said.
Madugu expressed confidence that the Super Falcons can bounce back, stressing that the team will learn from the defeat and remain focused on achieving its ultimate objective of retaining the continental title.
The Super Falcon will face Group C table leader, Zambia on Saturday in a must-win second group match.
