Trump Unveils $8 Billion Relief Fund to Cut Farmers Fuel Costs

American President Donald Trump has rolled out an $8 billion financial relief initiative designed to assist US farmers in managing expensive diesel fuel requirements throughout the harvest period.

Trump made the announcement on Monday during a midterm election campaign speech in Kansas, describing the initiative as a new “harvest fuel relief program” to be launched by the US Department of Agriculture.

“Tonight, I’m also pleased to announce that the Department of Agriculture will be launching a new harvest fuel relief program, providing our farmers with $8 billion in support to offset diesel costs during this harvest season,” he said.

The Department of Agriculture later confirmed that the funding would be used for one-time payments to American farmers to provide relief from temporary market disruptions and rising input costs.

According to the department, the programme will provide proportional support to producers using a uniform formula designed to cover part of their estimated losses during the 2026 crop year. The department’s Farm Service Agency will administer the payments.

The announcement comes as Trump and the Republican Party seek to maintain support in agricultural states ahead of the November midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress. Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Trump’s approval rating has fallen amid concerns over the high cost of living, with the US-Israeli war on Iran contributing to rising fuel prices. The administration has also faced pressure to support farmers as operating costs increase, particularly in states with competitive Senate races.

Earlier this month, Trump signed an executive order that he said would expand access to tax-exempt diesel, as part of efforts to ease fuel costs.

The latest announcement adds to a series of financial pledges made by Trump ahead of the midterm elections. He has separately proposed sending $5,000 payments to adult US citizens if Republicans retain control of Congress, a proposal that has drawn scepticism from analysts, economists and some Republican lawmakers.

Earlier in October, Trump also announced a proposed one-time payment of $90 to more than 20 million Americans enrolled in Medicare, the federal health insurance programme for older people.
