Spain came from behind to beat England 3-2 in a thrilling UEFA Nations League opener at Wembley on Saturday.
The reigning world champions made the perfect start when Lamine Yamal capitalised on a mistake by Marc Guéhi to put Spain ahead in the second minute, calmly finishing past James Trafford.
England responded strongly and drew level in the 35th minute.
Jude Bellingham drove forward on a counter-attack before finding Anthony Gordon, who kept his composure to beat Unai Simón and make it 1-1.
The hosts then completed the turnaround four minutes later when Harry Kane headed in from Nico O’Reilly’s cross to give England a 2-1 lead at half-time.
England had a golden opportunity to extend their advantage shortly after the restart when Kane was awarded a penalty.
However, the England captain struck the crossbar, leaving Spain alive in the contest.
Spain took advantage of the reprieve and levelled in the 56th minute through substitute Álex Baena, who curled a precise effort into the bottom corner.
The visitors completed the comeback 12 minutes later. Baena again provided the decisive contribution, threading a superb pass through the England defence for Mikel Oyarzabal, who lifted the ball over the advancing Trafford to make it 3-2.
England pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but Spain held firm to begin their Nations League campaign with victory.
The defeat leaves England without a point from their opening Group A3 fixture, while Spain take the early lead with three points.
The result also extends Spain’s remarkable unbeaten run in competitive matches to 39 games, according to beIN Sports.
For England manager Thomas Tuchel, the result marks a disappointing start to the new Nations League campaign after the Three Lions finished third at this year’s World Cup.
England’s next Group A3 match is away to Czechia on Tuesday.
