A newly married couple, identified as Funmilayo Bamidele and Rev. Abiodun David, have been abducted by armed assailants while returning from their engagement ceremony in Eruku, Kwara State.
The couple were reportedly travelling with four other passengers on Saturday evening when their vehicle was intercepted along the Iyemero–Eruku route in Kogi State.
The incident was initially reported as having occurred in Kwara State.
However, the Chief Press Secretary to the Ekiti local government chairman in Kwara State, Mr Dada Sunday, confirmed the incident to Daily Trust on Sunday.
He clarified that the abduction occurred in Kogi State.
According to Sunday, although the incident did not occur in Kwara State, the local government remained concerned because the victims were returning from an event held in the council.
He said the bride was believed to be from Eruku in Ekiti, Kwara State, where the couple had held their engagement ceremony.
He said the vehicle was originally expected to travel through the Isanlu Road.
However, the driver reportedly opted for an alternative route to enable him to drop off the best man and other members of the group in Iyamoye.
The vehicle was subsequently intercepted by armed assailants along the Iyemero–Eruku route in Kogi State, where the couple and the other occupants were reportedly abducted.
The whereabouts of the four other passengers remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
Sunday said security agencies and other relevant authorities were working to locate the victims and secure their safe release.
He also reiterated that Iyemero is in Kogi State, not Kwara State, and said reports placing the location of the abduction in Kwara were incorrect.
Meanwhile, calls to the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, were not answered as of press time.
