The Senate has passed for second reading a bill seeking to repeal and replace the existing law establishing the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Umar Sadiq Suleiman, representing Kwara North, seeks to strengthen the agency’s regulatory powers over food, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics and other regulated products.
It also aims to promote local manufacturing, improve consumer protection, strengthen enforcement mechanisms and align Nigeria’s regulatory system with international best practices.
The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Secondary and Tertiary, for further legislative action, with a mandate to report back in four weeks.
