The Police Service Commission (PSC) has commended the Nigeria Police Force for displaying professionalism, orderliness and cordiality during the August 15, 2026, Osun State Governorship Election.
The commission disclosed this in its interim report on Sunday after concluding its monitoring of police conduct across Osun Central, Osun East and Osun West Senatorial Districts.
The report was based on field observations from polling units across the state’s 30 local government areas, with the monitoring exercise assessing police deployment, professionalism, compliance with election duty guidelines, inter-agency cooperation and the general conduct of officers.
According to the PSC, police deployment across the state was adequate and strategic, with an average of four officers assigned to each polling unit. The commission recorded an average of three officers per polling unit in Osun Central, while Osun East and Osun West recorded an average of five officers each.
The commission also noted the presence of personnel from other security and safety agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Department of State Services, Nigeria Immigration Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, Federal Fire Service, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Nigeria Correctional Service, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy and Defence Intelligence Agency.
It said the agencies complemented the police at various polling units and the Election Joint Operations Control Room, adding that the inter-agency collaboration was cordial and contributed significantly to the peaceful conduct of the election.
The leader of the PSC monitoring team, DIG (Dr) Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), expressed satisfaction with the conduct of police personnel during the election.
Lakanu commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for what he described as an effective deployment strategy, which included the appointment of DIG Isyaku Mohammed, Ph.D, as the Election DIG and CP Samuel Erale Etaifo as the Election CP.
He said the deployment of experienced officers contributed to the successful conduct of the election.
The PSC further reported that police officers across the three senatorial districts generally demonstrated professionalism and courtesy while carrying out their duties.
According to the commission, officers were observed to be approachable and orderly, while they responded appropriately to inquiries from members of the monitoring teams.
“Overall, the Nigeria Police Force exhibited a high level of professionalism, orderliness and cordiality during the election,” the PSC stated.
The commission said it would continue to exercise oversight over the police to ensure that officers deployed for electoral duties operate in line with established professional standards.
