Peter Obi Advocates for Thirty Specialised Cancer Treatment Centres Across Nigeria

Political figure and former presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged for a significant enhancement of Nigeria’s cancer healthcare infrastructure, asserting that access to proper medical attention should not rely on an individual’s personal wealth or capacity to travel overseas.

The former Anambra State governor made the call in a post on X while reflecting on his encounter with cancer survivors, saying their experiences highlighted the urgent need to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment in the country.

Obi said, “Today, I was surrounded by cancer survivors, and the encounter was deeply moving. Their presence reminded me what is at stake in cancer care. Behind every statistic is a Nigerian whose survival should never depend on wealth or the ability to travel abroad.”

He argued that cancer treatment must be made accessible to Nigerians regardless of their financial circumstances.

“Cancer care should not be a privilege reserved for those who can afford it,” Obi said.

He proposed the establishment of at least five fully equipped specialised cancer centres in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

According to him, the expansion of infrastructure should be complemented by stronger measures focused on prevention, screening, early detection, research and affordable treatment.

Obi said the objective should be to ensure that Nigerians do not lose their lives because appropriate medical care is unavailable, diagnosis is delayed or treatment costs are beyond their means.

“The goal is simple: no Nigerian should die because care is too far away, diagnosis came too late, or treatment is unaffordable,” he said.

Reflecting further on his meeting with the survivors, Obi said their experiences reinforced the importance of placing human lives at the centre of policymaking.

“The survivors reminded me that behind every policy are human lives and the hope of a longer life,” he said.

He stressed that access to healthcare should be regarded as a fundamental necessity rather than a luxury, insisting that geography and income should not determine a Nigerian’s chances of surviving cancer.

“Healthcare is not a luxury. Survival should not depend on geography or income. Cancer care should not be a privilege. It should be a right,” Obi said.

What You Should Know

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has proposed the development of at least five fully equipped specialised cancer centres in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to tackle the rising burden of the disease. His call emphasizes that healthcare should be a fundamental human right rather than a privilege reserved for the wealthy or those who can afford medical tourism.

  • Positive Impact: If implemented, this expansion would drastically reduce travel burdens, lower treatment costs, and drastically improve early detection and survival rates for everyday Nigerians.
  • Potential Concerns: The proposal faces significant hurdles regarding government funding, infrastructural maintenance, and the timely execution required to bring thirty specialised facilities to operational standards.
