Onaiyekan Urges Opposition Parties to Unite for 2027

According to the G-100 Coalition, revered Catholic cleric Cardinal John Onaiyekan has called on opposition political factions to forge a united front ahead of the upcoming 2027 general elections, ensuring Nigerians have viable choices at the polls.

The coalition disclosed this in a statement signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman on Thursday, following a meeting between its leaders and the Cardinal at his residence on October 29, 2026.

According to the statement, the delegation briefed Onaiyekan on efforts to bring opposition parties together under a common platform to strengthen democratic competition and provide an alternative leadership for the country.

The coalition said it also informed the Cardinal about progress made in developing three key documents that would guide its activities and proposed political cooperation.

The documents include the National Covenant for Democratic Renewal, which outlines the coalition’s principles; the Framework for Opposition Unity, which explains how the alliance would operate; and the National Reform Programme, which sets out the policy priorities of a government that emerges from the cooperation.

It said work on the documents had been concluded, while efforts were ongoing to formally adopt them ahead of the coalition’s second summit scheduled for Monday, November 9, 2026.

At the summit, all political parties under the coalition are expected to publicly endorse and unveil the documents.

The statement said Onaiyekan commended the opposition leaders and expressed support for their efforts to build a united opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Cardinal was also quoted as expressing satisfaction that Nigerians could have credible choices at the polls, enabling them to determine their future and leadership.
