Obi Calls For Urgent Action At Sokoto IDP Camp Housing Over 1,000

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has called on the Federal Government to urgently improve conditions at the Ramin Kura Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Sokoto North Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

Obi made the call after visiting the camp on Tuesday, September 29, during the final day of his two-day visit to the state.

He said more than 1,000 internally displaced persons were living in the camp, where he observed what he described as overcrowded and inadequate living conditions.

According to Obi, some residents were housed in makeshift shelters and thatched rooms, with as many as 10 people occupying a single room.

He said the camp also lacked adequate toilet facilities, a primary healthcare centre and a basic school for children living there.

“I have always insisted that as long as even one Nigerian lives in an IDP camp, we are all internally displaced,” Obi said.

He urged the government to make temporary accommodation for displaced Nigerians more habitable while addressing the insecurity and other conditions that forced them from their communities.

“The government of today must work assiduously to make the temporary accommodation for our dear citizens living in these camps comfortable, while ensuring that all the underlying security issues that created these conditions in the first place are resolved,” he said.

Obi said the ultimate objective should be to enable displaced persons return safely to their ancestral homes.

The former governor said the Sokoto visit was his 12th visit to IDP camps across Nigeria and pledged to continue supporting displaced Nigerians.

During his two-day engagement in Sokoto, Obi said he also held consultations with groups across the state on insecurity, out-of-school children, poverty, youth unemployment and drug prevalence.

He further called for greater attention to the conditions of vulnerable Nigerians, urging political office holders to spend their holidays within the country to better understand the challenges facing citizens.

“President’s and political office holders’ holidays must be within Nigeria, so that they can see first-hand the difficulties faced by these fellow Nigerians,” he said.

Obi also called on the government and relevant agencies to urgently intervene in the conditions at the Ramin Kura camp and address the immediate needs of its residents.
