Kenyans Storm Police Station With Casket Over Unsolved Killing

Angered by the killing of a local resident, community members in Shamata, Nyandarua County, Kenya, marched to a nearby police station carrying a casket to demand immediate action.

The protesters halted the burial of the deceased, identified as Gashema, and marched to Shamata Police Station on Wednesday, 28 October, demanding a speedy investigation into his death.

According to Kenyan news outlet Kenyans.co.ke, hundreds of residents took part in the protest, carrying placards and twigs, while some carried a brown casket allegedly containing the deceased’s body.

One of the protesters said the demonstration was organised to demand justice for Gashema, who was reportedly murdered the previous week.

“We have come here today to picket regarding the issue of one Gashema who was murdered in cold blood last week, and all we’re asking the government is that justice must be served,” the protester said.

The residents also expressed concern over rising crime in the area and called on security agencies to strengthen efforts to protect the community.

Police said investigations into the killing had commenced, adding that they had identified four suspects who would be pursued as the inquiry progressed.

A police official appealed to community volunteers to assist in identifying the suspects to facilitate further investigations.

The protesters reportedly remained outside the station for several hours before police intervened to calm the situation.

The mourners were subsequently urged to return and take the body to the mortuary while investigations continued.

The incident highlights growing community demands for accountability and justice following violent crimes in the area.
