Kano APC Dares Kwankwaso to Prove Governor Yusuf Is Sabotaging Gwarzo

The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has challenged Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to provide proof that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is involved in alleged plots to disqualify Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate, from the 2027 elections.

In a statement issued, the APC chairman in Kano, Umar Haruna Doguwa, dismissed the allegation as false and baseless, challenging the former Kano governor to provide credible evidence rather than make claims capable of heating up the polity.

Doguwa said the legal action that stalled the inclusion of Gwarzo’s name on the list was instituted by members of the NDC against the party and had nothing to do with the APC, Governor Yusuf or the Kano State Government.

The party accused Kwankwaso of attempting to divert attention from the internal challenges confronting his party.

“Attempts to associate the APC and its candidate, Governor Yusuf, with the matter are misleading and intended to shift attention from the internal challenges confronting the NDC,” the statement said.

It further challenged Kwankwaso to substantiate his claims, insisting that the judiciary was an independent arm of government whose proceedings and decisions could not be dictated by the APC or the state governor.

The party said it had no interest in interfering with the electoral process or using state power against political opponents, stressing that every eligible candidate had a constitutional right to contest the 2027 elections.

It reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles and urged political actors to allow relevant institutions to discharge their constitutional responsibilities without politicising disputes arising from internal party disagreements.

What You Should Know

The Kano APC is pushing back against Senator Kwankwaso’s allegations that the state government is using the courts to block a rival’s 2027 election bid. The APC claims the legal battle against Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo was started by his own party members, not the governor.

  • Positive Impact: This public clarification emphasizes the independence of the judiciary and encourages parties to resolve internal disputes without blaming the state government, potentially reducing political tension.
  • Potential Concerns: Continuous accusations and counter-accusations between major political figures in Kano can create a climate of instability and distract from governance as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
