Personnel of the Joint Task Force, North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, successfully thwarted an offensive launched by members of the Lakurawa terrorist sect targeting a Forward Operating Base situated in Maiyama, Kebbi State.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, October 7, when the terrorists, reportedly operating on more than 100 motorcycles, stormed the base with assorted weapons, including General Purpose Machine Guns and Rocket-Propelled Grenades.
According to the Theatre Command, the troops responded swiftly and forced the attackers to withdraw without achieving their objective.
The terrorists reportedly abandoned weapons, equipment and other logistics as they fled the area.
Troops subsequently conducted exploitation and pursuit operations around the area, recovering 17 motorcycles, a PKT machine gun, an AK-47 rifle, assorted ammunition and a communication device believed to have been used by the terrorists.
The Theatre Command said the recovery had dealt a significant blow to the group’s operational capability in the area.
It added that troops were maintaining control of the general area while conducting aggressive patrols, clearance and dominance operations to track and neutralise fleeing members of the group.
The Media Information Officer of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, said the operation remained focused on denying terrorists freedom of movement and protecting communities across the Joint Operations Area.
