Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a suspension by the Portugal national team and will appear before a disciplinary council following his decision to walk out of the national camp.
The 41-year-old national legend caused a major storm after he was an unused substitute in Portugal’s Nations League match against Norway.
Ronaldo fumed at coach Jorge Jesus’ snub despite warming up for half an hour, and left the team three days later.
Ronaldo apologized several days later and stated that he was awaiting the disciplinary consequence of his actions.
The Portugal Football Federation (FPF) subsequently revealed that it suspended Ronaldo automatically for walking out on the team.
It stated his actions were contrary to article 14 paragraph 2 of its disciplinary regulations, and the matter was before its disciplinary instruction committee.
“Disciplinary proceedings were initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, by decision of the Non-Professional Section, on October 9, 2026, with the objective of ascertaining the potential disciplinary relevance of the facts reported on October 7, 2026.
“Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of initiation, a non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined, and the proceedings were given urgent status. “The proceedings were sent, on October 10, 2026, to the Disciplinary Instruction Committee of the FPF (Portuguese Football Federation), with publicity excluded until the end of the investigation.”
Ronaldo, seen as a national treasure after leading his country to its three major titles till date, has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances, and is just 20 goals from reaching his landmark 1,000 career goals.
