The 401 Flying Training School (401 FTS) of the Nigerian Air Force has successfully instructed approximately 900 pilots for both the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian Navy, while also playing a vital role in advancing military aviation across the African continent.
Established in 1964 as the Light Liaison Transport Squadron, the school serves as the starting point for flying training in the Nigerian Air Force, equipping young aviators with the skills, discipline and professional competence required for military operations.
Beyond teaching flying techniques, the institution instils confidence, courage, sound judgement and airmanship, preparing trainees for the demanding responsibilities of military aviation.
Over the decades, 401 FTS has expanded its training programmes from basic and ab-initio flying to transport operations, instructor pilot training, type-rating, captaincy and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations.
Its contribution also extends beyond Nigeria, having trained 27 pilots from six African countries: Benin Republic, Cape Verde, Niger Republic, Zimbabwe, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
The school has operated several aircraft and platforms to meet changing training requirements, including the RV-6A Air Beetle, DO-228, DA-40NG, DA-42MPP, Super Mushshak and CW-40 UAV.
It has also conducted specialised tactical, mission command and instrument courses, strengthening the Nigerian Air Force’s capacity to develop skilled personnel for both conventional and unmanned aviation operations.
Beyond its training responsibilities, 401 FTS contributes to national security through operational support to Operation FASAN YAMA, Operation HADIN KAI and Operation HADARIN DAJI.
The institution remains central to the Nigerian Air Force’s drive to build a professional, disciplined and operationally effective force capable of responding to the country’s evolving security challenges.
Its legacy is reflected not only in the number of pilots it has produced but also in the competence, resilience and fighting spirit it instils in its trainees.
From their first lessons in the cockpit to the demands of modern air operations, 401 FTS continues to shape the aviators who will safeguard Nigeria’s airspace and sustain the nation’s air power.
