The Federal Government has formally established a ministerial committee designed to halt the ongoing destruction of power infrastructure across the nation.
Speaking at the committee’s inaugural meeting, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the panel would focus on protecting critical national assets and ensuring a stable electricity supply nationwide.
He stated that the committee has the responsibility to develop effective strategies to prevent attacks across the power value chain; from generation, to transmission and distribution.
The move followed persistent cases of vandalism, which continue to disrupt electricity supply, escalate repair costs, and threaten huge investments in the power sector.
The committee deliberated on urgent measures to curb the menace, stressing the need for stronger inter-agency collaboration to protect critical national assets.
Members of the committee include the Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security, Adeyinka Famadewa, Directors from the Office of the National Security Adviser, officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Power and other key stakeholders.
What You Should Know
The Federal Government has stepped up efforts to protect critical electricity installations by setting up a dedicated high-level committee. This body brings together security agencies and government officials to design foolproof strategies preventing attacks on power facilities ranging from generation plants down to local distribution networks.
- Positive Impact: Successfully reducing vandalism could lead to a more stable and reliable electricity supply for homes and businesses, lowering operational costs and boosting productivity.
- Potential Concerns: Continued security breaches and slow inter-agency response times could still hinder progress, meaning citizens may not experience immediate relief until enforcement measures take full effect.
