Samuel Ogazi made history on Saturday as the first Nigerian male athlete to win a gold medal in the 400m event at the Commonwealth Games.
Ogazi finished in a time of 44.25s to claim gold ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards who clocked 44.82s, and South Africa’s Zakithi Nene who claimed bronze in 45.21s in Glasgow.
The 20-year-old NCAA record breaker had set the fastest-ever semi-final time of 44.52s to reach the final where he did not disappoint as the overwhelming favourite.
Following the blast of the gun, Ogazi stayed in touch with early leader Richards in the first 200 metres before showing expert technique and speed reserve to dash ahead of Richards and pull away from the field in the final 100 metres. Ogazi was however 0.02s short of a new Commonwealth record.
It is Nigeria’s 10th gold medal at the ongoing Games, with Ella Onojuvwevwo also claiming bronze medal in the female category of the event minutes later.
She finished in 51 seconds, behind Jamaica’s Dejaene Oakley and Barbados’ Sada Williams.
Nigeria has won 10 gold, six silver, and four bronze medals so far at the ongoing Commonwealth Games.
