Ondo Police Rescue Murder Suspects And Arrest 14 After Station Attack

The Ondo State Police Command successfully rescued two murder suspects from an agitated crowd in the Ala community of Akure North Local Government Area, after residents attempted to lynch them over the suspected killing of a farmer named Rasheed Hassan.

The command also arrested 14 suspects over an attack on a police station, officers and a rescue team, while two police officers sustained gunshot injuries during the violence.

The incident followed the discovery of Hassan’s body at General Camp in the Government Reserve area on October 24, 2026.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the police spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, said preliminary observations showed that the deceased had deep cuts on his head and other parts of his body. His belongings were also reportedly missing.

Jimoh said police operatives visited the scene after receiving a report of the incident, recovered the body and commenced investigations to identify and arrest those responsible.

According to the statement, the Ala Youth President arrested two suspects on October 26 and was taking them to the police station when an angry mob confronted him, demanding that the suspects be handed over for extrajudicial killing.

The youth leader reportedly sought refuge at the Ala Divisional Police Headquarters with the suspects. However, the mob followed them to the facility and attacked the station.

The police said the attackers pelted the facility with stones and other dangerous objects and resisted efforts by rescue teams to reach the area.

As the situation escalated, tactical and other rescue teams were deployed to restore order and protect lives.

At about 1:45 a.m. on October 27, police operatives successfully rescued the two suspects from the mob.

However, the patrol team conveying the suspects to Akure subsequently came under attack, leaving two officers with gunshot injuries allegedly caused by pellets fired from a pump-action firearm.

The injured officers were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The command said 14 suspects were subsequently arrested in connection with the attack on the police facility, the assault on officers and the attack on the rescue team.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the individual roles of those arrested and determine whether other persons were involved.

The police reiterated the need for members of the public to allow law enforcement agencies to investigate criminal allegations and ensure suspects face due process rather than resorting to mob justice.
