Six persons were killed and two others seriously injured in a road crash along the Kabba–Odo-Ape Road in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The accident occurred on Saturday at about 2:35pm when a commercial vehicle reportedly collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction.
Eyewitnesses said the impact shattered one of the vehicles, leaving debris scattered across the road.
“Several of the persons in the ill-fated vehicle were trapped inside the debris. Rescuers had to break the vehicle to bring out some of the dead bodies,” a community source said.
The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lawal Fagge, attributed the crash to speeding and reckless driving.
He said the accident occurred at about 2:41pm when a commercial Opel vehicle with registration number JJN126CF lost control and collided with a Howo truck with registration number BKK49YQ.
Fagge said eight people were involved in the crash, comprising three males and five females.
“Six victims, two males and four females, lost their lives, while two others sustained serious injuries,” he said.
He said the injured victims and bodies of the deceased were taken to the General Hospital, Kabba, for treatment and autopsy.
“We will continue to advise motorists to avoid speeding and unnecessary overtaking. This is very important in preventing road crashes,” Fagge said.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State government has commiserated with the families of those who died in the crash and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, in a statement on Sunday, conveyed Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s sadness over the tragedy, describing the loss of lives as painful and unfortunate.
Fanwo appealed to motorists to make safety a priority, stressing that no destination was worth risking human lives.
He urged motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads, particularly as the FRSC identified speeding as a contributing factor to the crash.
The commissioner also warned that reckless driving, dangerous overtaking and driving while fatigued could turn ordinary journeys into tragedies.
