Some personnel of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) and the police working with the FCT Ministerial Taskforce team were reportedly injured when suspected scavengers and commercial motorcycle operators attacked them around Godab Estate area of Life Camp, Abuja.
The incident reportedly occurred after the team had concluded a routine enforcement operation in the area and was returning from the exercise.
A source familiar with the operation, Usman Suleiman, said the personnel were ambushed by suspected attackers who allegedly used machetes and other dangerous weapons during the assault.
Suleiman said the attack resulted in injuries to seven personnel, comprising four police officers and three DRTS officials.
“They were ambushed while returning from the operation,” he said.
Spokesperson of FCT DRTS, Kalu Emetu, who confirmed the incident, said details were still sketchy.
He, however, condemned attacks on personnel who are out on lawful enforcement exercises.
A video purportedly showing a convoy of the taskforce team during the encounter is trending on some platforms.
There were also claims that gunshots were fired during the confrontation.
However, Daily Trust could not independently verify the number of shots fired or establish whether anyone sustained gunshot injuries.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the incident did not fall under the jurisdiction of the command.
Her response could not immediately be reconciled with the report that police officers were among those allegedly injured in the incident.
The identities and current conditions of the injured personnel were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
