A 27-year-old artificial intelligence researcher, Jacob Coxon, has left Anthropic after accusing the company and OpenAI of recklessly racing to develop self-improving superintelligent AI.
Coxon, who previously worked at OpenAI before joining Anthropic this year, said neither company was acting responsibly and warned that the pursuit of increasingly autonomous AI systems could pose an existential threat to humanity.
He said many people working on advanced AI privately believe the technology could potentially kill humans before the end of the decade, describing the concern as more than a marketing or publicity stunt.
Anthropic safety executive Evan Hubinger publicly backed Coxon’s concerns, saying he estimated the risk of AI causing human extinction within the next decade at more than 10 per cent.
He also acknowledged that Anthropic does not yet have a clear plan for ensuring a superintelligent system would remain under human control.
Coxon argued that government intervention and international coordination may be necessary because individual AI companies cannot safely manage the risks while competing to develop the most powerful systems first.
His resignation comes amid growing calls from AI researchers and technology leaders for stronger safeguards and a coordinated slowdown in the development of frontier AI systems.
