Residents of Kumo, headquarters of Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State, have raised the alarm over the worsening gully erosion threatening homes, farmlands and roads in several parts of the town.
The residents, particularly those in Zadawa, Jauro Musa, Nasarawo and Waziri Malle communities, said the erosion had continued to expand, destroying portions of farmland and encroaching on residential areas.
According to them, some houses have already been affected, while several others are at risk of collapse if urgent intervention is not provided.
A community development advocate, Bello Barambu, appealed to the Gombe State Government, Akko Local Government Council and relevant federal agencies to urgently intervene to prevent further destruction.
Barambu called for the deployment of environmental and engineering experts to assess the extent of the damage and recommend lasting solutions, including the construction and rehabilitation of drainage channels and measures to control the expansion of the gullies.
He also appealed to the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to collaborate in providing relief and intervention to affected residents.
“This is not just a complaint; it is a cry for help. We need intervention now before the situation turns into a major disaster,” Barambu said.
The residents further appealed to their representatives in the legislature, development organisations and other stakeholders to support efforts to protect lives, homes and livelihoods from the growing threat.
