Troops of the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Lokoja, have arrested two persons allegedly transporting mining equipment for illegal mining activities in Kogi State. Daily Trust reports that the troops intercepted the vehicle conveying the equipment between Girinya in Kogi Local Government Area and Agbaja in Lokoja Local Government Area. Receiving the recovered equipment at the headquarters of the 12 Brigade yesterday, the State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd), said the vehicle was intercepted and the two drivers arrested following credible intelligence. Omodara said the successful interception demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led security operations in the state. He said security agencies had been directed to sustain the ongoing crackdown on criminal activities, stressing that the state government would continue to strengthen collaboration with the military and other security agencies. According to him, illegal mining activities, if not curtailed, could worsen insecurity by providing criminal elements with access to remote forest locations to carry out their activities. He said the Kogi State Government commended the 12 Brigade for intercepting the equipment and apprehending the suspects.
The security adviser urged residents to provide useful information to security agencies to nip criminal activities in the bud.
Items recovered from the suspects included a Hiace bus, shovels, a petrol pump, head pans and other equipment believed to be intended for mining operations.
