Three decades after steering the Super Eagles to an unforgettable triumph in the men’s football tournament at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, former coach Jo Bonfrere has revealed that he is yet to receive his gold medal or the incentives that were promised to him.
The Dutch tactician made the disclosure during an interview with CreativeLordTV in Ebonyi State, where he attended the opening of Chief Agueze’s country home on Saturday, October 10, 2026.
Asked whether the promises made to him following Nigeria’s historic triumph had been fulfilled, the 80-year-old coach, speaking through an interpreter, said he had never received the medal and had no idea what it looked like.
“I have never seen the gold. That’s the problem, so I don’t know how it looks. I don’t know how the gold medal looks because I have never received it,” he said.
Bonfrere’s account, as relayed by the interpreter, suggested that while members of the victorious team and other officials had received their rewards, he was yet to be compensated for his contribution to the achievement.
“Every player has received, even the reward, every player and official. So after 30 years, I have never received my reward,” the interpreter said while conveying the coach’s account.
The claim raises questions about whether the promises made to the coach after Nigeria’s historic Olympic football victory were fulfilled.
Bonfrere was at the helm when Nigeria’s Under-23 team made history at the Atlanta Games, defeating Argentina 3-2 in the final to become the first African nation to win the Olympic gold medal in men’s football.
The Nigerian side’s campaign remains one of the country’s most celebrated football achievements, with the team overcoming strong opposition to secure the title against a star-studded Argentine squad.
Beyond the outstanding performance on the pitch, Bonfrere also recalled the challenges he faced in selecting the team that eventually won the tournament.
According to the interpreter, the coach faced repeated pressure from a minister to include certain players in the squad. However, Bonfrere reportedly insisted on making his own selection, maintaining that he needed to choose the players he believed could deliver victory for Nigeria.
The interpreter said the minister repeatedly urged the coach to field particular players, but Bonfrere stood by his judgment and the team he considered capable of winning the competition.
Despite the reported disagreements surrounding team selection, Nigeria went on to defeat Argentina 3-2 in the final, securing a landmark victory that elevated the country’s standing in international football.
Thirty years later, Bonfrere’s assertion that he has neither received his Olympic gold medal nor his promised reward has brought renewed attention to his personal account of the historic achievement.
The claim, however, has not been independently verified.
