President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally opened Section III of the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Expressway, focusing on the Zaria–Kano route. The development aims to enhance driving safety and accelerate commercial activities across the northern region.
Tinubu was represented at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The expressway is a major transportation route connecting Kano with Kaduna and other parts of the country, serving thousands of commuters, traders, commercial drivers and transport operators daily.
The completion of the section is expected to improve driving conditions, reduce hazards associated with damaged road surfaces and minimise accidents and avoidable loss of lives along the busy corridor.
The road is particularly significant to Kano, a major commercial and industrial hub whose economy depends largely on the movement of goods and people across state boundaries.
The improved highway is also expected to facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce, manufactured goods and other commodities between Kano, Kaduna and neighbouring states.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Yusuf commended Tinubu for prioritising major infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening transportation, trade and economic development in Northern Nigeria.
He said efficient road infrastructure was essential to connecting communities, facilitating the movement of goods and services and creating a better business environment.
The governor noted that the Kano–Zaria corridor was particularly important because of Kano’s position as a commercial centre serving several states across the North.
He said sustained investment in critical infrastructure would support agricultural production, expand market access and create opportunities for traders, transport operators and other businesses.
Yusuf called for continued collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments to address infrastructure challenges and accelerate development.
He also urged the Federal Government to sustain investment in road construction and rehabilitation in Kano, stressing the need for durable roads capable of withstanding heavy traffic.
The Kano State Government urged motorists using the improved highway to observe speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking and comply with traffic regulations to ensure safer journeys.
