Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reassured motorists that the Opebi-Odoiya Alaro Bridge will open for full public use ahead of the festive break, following brief setbacks encountered during the installation of a steel monument at the location.
Sanwo-Olu disclosed this in a post on X after visiting the site to assess progress and determine the reasons for the delay, having earlier announced that the bridge would open to traffic by the end of September based on the work plan presented to him.
He explained that the 25-metre steel monument was designed to preserve the history of the Cane Village, which once occupied the site and was known for its cane market.
According to the governor, the monument features four hands of cane weaving as a tribute to the area’s heritage and is intended to serve as a new landmark along the corridor.
Sanwo-Olu said three of the four steel components had been fully assembled and fitted, while installation of the final section was ongoing.
“The monument is now 80% complete and we need just a few more days to finish the work,” he said.
The governor added that safety considerations had prevented the road from opening before the monument’s installation was completed.
“Safety remains our priority so we cannot open the road until every section is securely in place,” he stated.
Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the inconvenience caused to motorists by the delay and appealed for patience, assuring them that the bridge would be operational before the holiday period to provide a smoother journey.
