Nigeria’s fish import bill fell by 14.8 per cent to N167.91 billion in the second quarter of 2026, from N197.17 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2025, according to Ships & Ports.
The publication, citing data from the National Bureau of Statistics’ Foreign Trade in Goods Statistics, reported that the decline represents a year-on-year reduction of N29.26 billion.
According to the report, Nigeria imported six major categories of fish during the two periods.
They included blue whiting, herrings, mackerel, jack and horse mackerel, yellowfin tuna and other unclassified frozen fish.
Ships & Ports reported that the decline in the fish import bill came amid continued efforts to strengthen domestic production and reduce dependence on imported food products.
The NBS data provide a snapshot of Nigeria’s fish import trade during the period, although the figures do not indicate whether the decline in value was driven by lower import volumes, changes in prices, exchange-rate movements or a combination of factors.
