Nigeria is taking a prominent position at the United Nations as the high-level general debate of the 81st General Assembly gets underway in New York.
The country’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, is chairing the General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, which oversees the organisation’s administrative and budgetary affairs.
The UN lists Ibrahim as chairman of the Fifth Committee for the 81st session, placing a Nigerian diplomat at the head of one of the Assembly’s six main committees.
Ibrahim assumed the chairmanship earlier this month after being elected to lead the committee, with a pledge to pursue transparency, accountability and administrative reforms within the world body.
Marking Nigeria’s presence at the opening of the high-level debate, Ibrahim said: “Nigeria on the front.”
The moment highlights Nigeria’s diplomatic role at a time the UN is confronting major debates over its finances, institutional reforms, peacekeeping and the future of multilateral cooperation.
The 81st General Assembly opened on September 8, while the high-level general debate runs from September 22 to October 2. The session is being held under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Ibrahim’s committee is expected to play a significant role in discussions over the UN’s budget and administration as the organisation faces financial pressures and demands for institutional reform.
For Nigeria, the chairmanship provides a prominent platform in the UN’s decision-making structure as world leaders gather to debate conflicts, global economic pressures, climate change, artificial intelligence and reforms to the multilateral system.
