Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has expressed his desire to face Real Madrid in another edition of El Clásico, highlighting the special significance of the rivalry for players who graduate from the club’s La Masia academy.
Speaking to Movistar on Friday, the 19-year-old made clear his excitement about facing Barcelona’s biggest rivals.
“I want to face Real Madrid in El Clásico. I’d really love that.”
Yamal explained that players who come through La Masia are introduced to the importance of the fixture from an early age and understand the intensity surrounding the rivalry.
“If you come from La Masia, you know El Clásico feels like a battle,” Yamal said.
The Barcelona star also recalled watching Marcus Rashford feature in his first Clásico, suggesting the forward initially did not fully appreciate what the fixture represented.
“I remember I watched Rashford play on his first Clásico and thought to myself that he does NOT yet know what this game means,” he said.
According to Yamal, Rashford appeared to grasp the significance of the rivalry more clearly during the return fixture, when the forward scored from a free kick and delivered a more intense display.
“Then in the return leg, he truly understood what a Clásico means, when he scored a goal from a free kick and played with a different intensity.
“When you come from La Masia, from your very first Clásico, you already know what this match means.” Yamal added.
Yamal’s remarks underline the importance he attaches to the Barcelona-Real Madrid rivalry and his eagerness to take part in another meeting between the two Spanish giants.
