Inside Senator Abiru’s Emotional Homecoming and Major Educational Overhaul at Government College Lagos

Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos East, has further demonstrated his dedication to advancing the education sector by officially opening two reconstructed and modernized classroom blocks at Government College Lagos, located in Eric Moore, Surulere.

The project marks a special homecoming for Abiru, who attended the school between 1975 and 1980, and reflects his efforts to give back to the institution that helped shape his early years.

Facilitated by the senator and executed through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SSAP-SDGs), led by Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the intervention features improved classrooms, new furniture, upgraded sanitation facilities and a functional water supply system.

The project adds to Abiru’s previous interventions at the school, which include a school hall, an administrative building and a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) laboratory equipped with high-speed internet and solar power.

Beyond infrastructure, the senator expressed concern over the school’s performance in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), urging the school management, teachers, parents, students and relevant education authorities to work together to improve academic outcomes.

Abiru acknowledged the contributions of President Bola Tinubu, the SSAP-SDGs office, the Lagos State Government, education authorities, the school management and the Government College Lagos Old Boys Association to the initiative.

The intervention underscores the importance of collaboration between public officials, government institutions and alumni associations in improving school infrastructure, creating better learning environments and promoting academic excellence.
